Genesis 46:1-7, Snapshot #4
On two prior occasions, within the land of Canaan, the Lord spoke to Jacob regarding His promise and plans for the nation of Israel. Both took place at Bethel. The first was when Jacob was a young man while on his way out to Haran. The second was much later in life when he returned to the land. On both occasions one central aspect of the promise was God’s assurance that Jacob would eventually return to dwell in the land. What we naturally derive from our reading is that Jacob would go out from the land as a sort of mission but then later would return home to the land to live happily ever after. Today we will look at yet a third occasion, this one taking place at Beersheba. God reiterates His promise as before. But to our surprise God is asking this now very old man to pack all he has and to depart from the land once again. This is fascinating and so counter intuitive to how we think life ought to work. Let’s take a look at the story to see what we can discover about Jacob’s second journey.
